Hello everyone👋 today we will be talking about how Big Data is transforming the way we
live, work, and interact. It fuels innovations, drives decision-making
processes, and has the potential to bring about remarkable progress in various
industries. However, the rise of Big
Data also gives rise to social and ethical problems. In this blog I will talk
about these views and give my opinion on the situation.
Big Data faces a significant challenge in keeping privacy as large amounts of personal information are collected and analysed. The sheer volume of data, often including sensitive details, heightens the risk of unauthorized access and misuse. The potential for reidentification pose serious threats to individuals' privacy. Striking a balance between extracting valuable insights and safeguarding personal information is a persistent dilemma. This personal information can be sold to organisations which may use it in a negative way. We have already seen the threat of big data in Ireland when the HSE was cyberattacked. These hackers gained access to everyone who has sensitive private information stored in the HSE’s database. These include people’s sensitive medical history etc. Some of this information was posted online which is a severe breach in privacy and who knows what information that was gathered from this attack was sold on the dark web and used in a negative way. Companies with this sensitive information need to improve their cyber protection.
As we can see from the image above most people are concerned
about their privacy online and don’t feel comfortable with the amount of
information these websites have on them. Personally, I would have to agree with
this statement as I feel my privacy is not being respected by these big
companies as any time, I go to use any website I have to accept cookies and
give my email and other details like my name and location. When will the line
be drawn limiting the amount of information these big data companies may obtain
on us?
